Join us in the garden
* Sadly, due to covid 19, our gardening club is closed for the moment. We are working hard (individually) to keep the plot going so there is something lovely to come back to later in the year. If you would like to talk about coming along in the future please do still get in touch.
Would you like to join us for a spot of gardening - sow seeds, take cuttings, dig, weed, feel the soil on your hands, watch the bees, listen to the birds, chat with a fellow gardener over a hot cup of tea and when the time is right, muck in and harvest beautiful English cut flowers, vegetables and herbs. You can garden at your own pace, get out in the fresh air and meet new folk - what's not to love! If you are unsure just give it a try and there's no obligation to come every week. Our free gardening club, based in Harpenden runs every Tuesday - watch a short film about the plot or scroll to the bottom of the page for a few pictures showing our progress. It seems gardening is now officially good for you - we found that out a long time ago but there is a growing body of evidence to prove it -
In 2016, The Kings Fund , commissioned by The National Gardens Scheme, published an independent report which details the broad and diverse health benefits of gardening. They call for the NHS to look seriously at green exercise and to utilise the significant impact on physical health and mental well being gardening can bring.
The University of Essex reported the results of their trial saying that finding that while exercise alone helped lower blood pressure, improve mood and self-esteem, exercising with a view of the natural world could have a synergistic effect, with subjects reporting significantly greater positive effects on their mental wellbeing after such sessions than after exercise alone.
